One Little Word

Are you playing along this year? I never thought that chosing one little word could make such a difference in my life, but it has.

Last year, the word I chose was home. I had just moved back to my hometown and I was really having difficulty adjusting to being back. After a year of reflecting, journaling, and embracing it, I can honestly say there is no where else that I would rather be at this time in my life.

This year, I am at it again. My OLW is "okay". I chose it because I have been fighting depression for about 1/2 a year, and the last couple of months, depression has been kicking my butt. With medication, I am learning that it is okay to say that I am not okay, that it is okay if everything is not perfect, it is okay to say NO, it is okay if I take a day off, it is okay to scrap a page and not have supper cooked, etc…. I know it is such a simple little word, but one that is more powerful than you can believe.

I want you to know that it is very hard for me to share this bit of information with you. That it is difficult to actually have to say the word depression out loud. I would like to tell you that I am okay with it, but I am not. I am hoping that by the end of 2012, I can say differently. We will see. But for now, I am okay with the word I have chosen, and I do believe that in time, I will be OKAY!

(((HUGS))) I've been struggling with depression myself for well over a year. I think it is something that many more people than we know suffer from but is maybe afraid to admit it. I think that admitting it is half the battle and hopefully 2012 will be the year that we can kick depression in the butt. lol! Take care!

Well, I for one, can say I know what depression feels like having experienced it through these last 4 1/2 years of living in Louisiana, instead of where I'd hoped to live (Houston) to be near my grown kids and granddaughter. I'm glad you got up the courage to tell us and truly once we say something it seems to diminish the heavy load on our hearts! Thank you for your honesty. Love your chosen word and can't wait to see more. Maybe I should do OLW...

Oh, Dani! I am sorry it has been so tough.
And depression is a serious condition!
It can change your whole view of the world, yourself, just everything.
I love your word!
And wishing you a happy new year!

I think it's great that you felt like you could open yourself up today on your blog. Sometimes just saying things out loud, like you did, can have amazing healing powers. I love the word you have chosen for this year and the meaning it has for you. That's what is so awesome about OLW!

Take care of yourself. I think my mother had this but it was never addressed and she turned to drugs..so please take care of you.

Thanks for sharing, I can imagine it was hard. I'm hoping you can change your word at the end of this year from "okay" to "great"!

How brave of you to post this....but I am not surprised at the support! The scrapbooking/paper crafting community is full of kind, caring, supportive women who all want the best for each other. I love "okay" as a word. It can be very powerful. I wish you the best of luck on your journey this year. :)

I admire you for posting this, as well as for facing it head on! I believe my dad deals with this, but hasn't really dealt with it. Okay is a fabulous word--so freeing! So many times as women we feel like we have to juggle a hundred things and do it all perfectly. However, at the end of the day, if we don't get it all done it really is "okay." Best wishes in 2012!
